Sarah Tracy Burrows

Stories are everywhere we look. My photography and writing touch and enlighten my soul. Since a young girl, when my maternal grandfather shared with me letters and history passed down through generations, I have been intrigued by the past and what people fought for, often the betterment of others. My hope is that my work touches and enlightens others and gives back - to war veterans, my communities, the world, and those who follow.

Raised in Syracuse, New York, Sarah graduated from William Smith College. Her photograph, “Walking on Clouds,” was awarded a First Prize in the 2018 Essex National Heritage Area Photography Contest. Sarah lives on the North Shore of Boston with her family and beloved Golden Retriever, “Scout.”

Sarah’s cause of choice is Meals on Wheels, which her grandfather benefited from and for which her mother, son and herself have volunteered.

“The interpretation of Landscape is an infinite quest I must explore; deconstruct, refine, simplify, defy, blur, mark, scrape, saturate, desaturate... in essence, to paint the landscape in various and countless forms is to journal life in all it's tenderness and boldness, it's depth and light. The paintings are open to interpretation and I encourage the viewer to create their own journey in finding personal significance in connection to the art.

Kristin Hart

"Color washed Photography inspired by nature."

Matthew Klos

Matthew Klos was born on the Northshore of Massachusetts to a family of artisans. He spent his childhood exploring the galleries of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Matthew’s work focuses on the representation of disabled body, art history, and the evidence of the artists’ hand. Loving everything handmade, Matthews’s photographic process is entirely analog. He exclusively shoots film and his printing methods of choice are rooted in 19th century processes such as platinum/palladium and silver gelatin. He also works extensively in mixed media, including life casting with lead, woodworking, and bookmaking. Matthew holds a BFA in Photography from the Art Institute of Boston and an MFA in Photography and Integrated Media with a concentration in mixed media from Lesley University College of Art and Design.

“My images show a tenuous and often perilous relationship between the mind and body that plays out across the array of investigative hand-printed photographs (note: the hand printed). Through doubt, trust, satire, existentialism, faith in the artistic process, and finally elements of my pain, I create a visual essay on existence.”

Matthew’s cause is SCI Boston, whose goal is to support individuals affected by spinal cord injuries and disorders.

PatRICIA Langley

Painting comes from the sweet spot of being in the moment with my self and the materials. There is no preconception; I want to convey a raw honest expression. That’s when things happen. Horses, landscape and natural elements find their way to the surface. My aim is to capture the visit.

Patricia’s supports a scholarship fund she and Jennifer Conway (of MOVING MS MINDFULLY) have set up for Finding True Self. Maria Malatesta

Artist Statement

My process is intuitive. It takes trust and time for the painting to evolve. Memories of being in the natural world inspire the color and gesture of the paintings.  Gardens, overgrown fields, open space, the sea and wind are all a source from which the paintings evolve.

Maria lives on the North Shore of Boston.  She teaches at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA.  She has taught in Umbria and Tortola, BVI. Maria’s work has been included in numerous group and solo shows in the Boston area.   Maria holds the Diploma and Fifth Year Certificate from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and a Bachelor of Science from Lesley University, Cambridge, MA.   She works in her studio in the South End of Boston.

Maria’s cause is The Alzheimer’s Association.

GORDON PRZYBYLA

A visual artist whose interests span drawing, painting, photography and videography, Gordon’s work focuses on the human form. As it has progressed, there has been a shift towards the material itself, with the figure playing the role of an excuse to push paint or pixels around.

Gordon has a BFA from Pratt Institute and has run a life drawing workshop at the Newburyport Art Association for 29 years. He is also a co-founder of the Free Art Program and has collaborated with Exit Dance Theater and Vardan Ovsepian. You can find out more about Gordon here.

Katie swatland

Katie Swatland is an artist and author living in New England. Her work is as ‘an intrinsic dance between reality and rêverie.’ She approaches the canvas through means of discovery, imparting a sense of playful curiosity throughout a broad range of subject matter. Gestural brushwork combine with areas of transparency, contrasted by passages of thick impasto paint, all intermingle in a symphony of lost and found edges.

Her early training in the sciences as a mechanical engineer, as well as a variety of physical disciplines focusing on the breath, greatly influence her way of painting today. She approaches the canvas in a meditative way, stating that ‘every work of art is built one brushstroke at at time, and one breath at a time. To honor the creative spirit is to be mindful and gracious toward the journey of the process.’ Her first instructional book, Alla Prima II:Companion, is currently in its second printing and explores the numerous considerations and technical nuances that go into the creation of a painting. Her second book, The Eternal Student was just released with a companion Owl Sketchbook this past December and eloquently explores the spirit of the eternal student . . . serving as a reminder to always withhold the innocence and inquisitive curiosity that parallels the pursuits of knowledge . . . remaining forever curious.

She is currently working to complete ‘The Alchemy Visions’ collection of paintings that center around a mystical interaction with light, and the interplay of light energy, as it travels from a source to the canvas surfaces — a series she began while embarking on a 29-month solitary painting retreat.

Katie’s cause is a scholarship for Finding True Self held twice a year at Roots to Wings in Newbury, Ma. This 2-day workshop led by Tao Master Chun Shim nim is focused on opening the heart to connect with your true nature and life purpose.

Stay tuned for more to come!
